Celebrating a Legacy of Music and Kindness
For more than four decades, Allegro Music Centre was a cornerstone of the Central Florida music community. Founded by Jim Jones in 1981, the store at 851 E SR 434 in Longwood became far more than a place to rent instruments or take lessons — it became a second home for countless students, teachers, and musicians across Seminole and Orange counties.
Jim Jones wasn't just a business owner. He was a West Virginia University-trained musician, a former high school band director, a trumpet player who performed in 23 countries, and a church choir director who gave his time and talent freely. But what truly defined Jim was his quiet generosity. He believed every child deserved the chance to make music, and he lived that belief every single day.
When Jim passed away on March 12, 2024 — just five days before his 79th birthday — he left behind his beloved wife Karen of 55 years, a grateful community, and thousands of students whose lives he touched. Allegro Music Centre has closed its doors, but the music Jim helped create will echo for generations.
Jim was humble, kind, funny, brave, patient, talented, charitable, generous, passionate, helpful, caring, considerate, and inspirational. Central Florida is quieter without him, but so much richer for having known him.
The Story That Touched the World
In 2009, a young student named Jacques Ruffin was renting a trumpet from Allegro Music Centre. His mother fell behind on the payments. Instead of demanding payment or repossessing the instrument, Jim Jones sent a letter that changed everything:
"Do not worry about the payment. Keep the horn. I would be happy if you would continue with your music and remember Allegro Music when you are a famous musician."
Years later, Jacques found that letter again. He posted it on Reddit, and it went viral. The story was picked up by news outlets across the country and around the world. Thousands of people were moved by Jim's simple act of grace — a reminder that kindness doesn't need a spotlight, but when it's seen, it inspires.
Jacques did keep playing. And he never forgot Allegro Music.
